Privacy Policy
Effective 9 October 2026
1. Who we are
Splitnor is an app for keeping track of shared expenses. It is operated by Teckam, based in India ("Teckam", "we", "us"). We are responsible for the personal data described in this policy. It applies to the Splitnor apps for iPhone and Android and to splitnor.com.
2. What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name and email address, and your password, which we store only as a secure one-way hash.
- Profile: a profile photo if you add one, your display currency and your time zone.
- Expenses and payments: descriptions, amounts, dates, categories, notes, who paid, how each expense is split, and payments you record between people, including any payment method you type in.
- Groups: group names, descriptions, categories, cover images and members.
- Comments you write on expenses.
- Splitwise imports: if you import a Splitwise CSV file, we read it once to create the expenses and payments in it. We don't keep the file itself.
Information about other people you add
When you add a friend or group member by email, or match a name during a Splitwise import, we store the email address and the name you enter so we can link expenses to them and send them an invitation. If that person isn't on Splitnor yet, we send them one email inviting them to join. Please only add people who would expect to hear from you about shared costs. Anyone can ask us to remove their details. See your rights.
Information collected automatically
- Device and notification data: if you allow notifications, a push token, your device platform and model (for example "Google Pixel 7"), and when the device was last active.
- Account activity: when you signed up, last signed in and last updated your profile, plus the activity feed of changes made in your groups.
- Technical logs: our servers keep basic logs (such as IP address, request time and errors) to keep the service running and secure.
What we don't collect
We don't ask for or collect your phone number, address, date of birth, contacts, location, or bank or card details. The app doesn't use your camera or microphone. Photos are only uploaded when you choose a file. We don't use advertising, analytics or tracking tools.
3. How we use it
- Running Splitnor: creating your account, calculating balances, showing shared expenses and suggesting settlements. Basis: performing our contract with you.
- Account emails: verification, password resets and security alerts. Basis: performing our contract, and our legitimate interest in keeping accounts secure.
- Notifications: about expenses, payments, friend requests and groups. You can turn each type off. Basis: performing our contract, and your consent for push notifications.
- Invitations: sending one invite to someone you add. Basis: our legitimate interest in letting you share costs with them.
- Safety and reliability: preventing abuse, fixing bugs and keeping the service secure. Basis: our legitimate interests.
- Legal requirements: meeting legal obligations and responding to lawful requests. Basis: legal obligation.
The "basis" notes are the legal grounds that some laws, such as GDPR, ask us to state. We don't sell your personal data, use it for advertising, or make automated decisions about you that have legal or similar effects.
4. Who can see your information
- Group members can see the group's name, image, members, expenses, payments, comments and balances, including your name and profile photo.
- Friends can see expenses and payments you share with them, and your name, email and photo.
- Your other groups, friends and expenses stay private to the people involved. Nothing you add is made public.
- You decide who to share with. Before adding someone to a group or expense, consider that they'll see its details.
- If you export a report (PDF or CSV), it contains that group's or friend's expense details. What happens to the file after you share it is up to you.
5. Service providers
We use a small number of trusted providers to run Splitnor. They process data only on our instructions, only to provide their service, and under contracts that require them to protect it:
- Cloud hosting provider: runs our servers and database, stores photos, and sends notifications (United States).
- Email delivery provider: sends account and notification emails (United States).
- Apple and Google push services: deliver notifications to iPhones and Android phones.
- Font and icon delivery networks: serve the fonts and icons the app uses, and receive your device's IP address when they load.
We'll give you the current list of providers on request.
Notifications can include short details such as the other person's name, the expense description and the amount. Apple and Google carry that text to your device.
If you choose to save your password, your phone's own password manager (iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager) stores it. We never see it.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect people's safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or sale of the business. In a sale, this policy would continue to apply to your data.
6. Where your data is stored
Teckam is based in India, and our servers are in the United States. Your information may therefore be processed outside the country where you live. Where the law requires it, for example for transfers from the EU or UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses offered by our providers.
7. How long we keep it
- While your account is open, we keep your information so the app can work.
- When you delete your account, we delete your profile, photo, notification settings and devices.
- Expenses and payments you shared with others stay in their groups so their balances remain correct, but they are no longer linked to your account.
- Deletion is completed within 30 days.
- Copies in backups are removed within a further 35 days.
- Groups that are fully settled may be archived automatically. Group owners can delete a group once it has no unsettled expenses.
- Server logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting, then deleted.
8. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it.
- Correct it. You can change your name and photo in the app; for anything else, contact us.
- Delete it. Use Account → Settings → Delete Account, or email us.
- Export it. You can export group and friend reports in the app, or ask us for a full copy.
- Object to or restrict certain uses, and withdraw consent, for example by turning off notifications.
- Complain to your local data protection authority.
Notifications: you can switch each type of email and push notification on or off in the app's notification settings, or turn push notifications off in your phone's settings. Security emails, such as password resets, can't be turned off.
To make a request, email support@splitnor.com from the address on your account. If you aren't a Splitnor user but someone added your details, you can also ask us to remove them. We'll respond within 30 days, and we may need to confirm your identity first. We won't treat you differently for exercising your rights.
9. Security
We protect your data with:
- encrypted connections (HTTPS)
- password hashing with bcrypt
- private storage for photos, shared only through links that expire
- encryption of stored data by our hosting provider
- access controls that limit who can reach production systems
Signing out of other devices happens automatically when you change your password. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password. If we learn of a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
10. Cookies and local storage
splitnor.com doesn't use cookies, analytics or advertising trackers. The Splitnor app stores a few things on your device so it works smoothly:
- your sign-in token, so you stay logged in
- a copy of your basic profile
- your theme choice
Signing out or uninstalling the app removes them.
11. Children
Splitnor is not for children under 13. If you are under 18, or under the age of digital consent where you live if that is higher, you need a parent or guardian's permission to use Splitnor. If we learn that we hold data from a child without the required consent, we'll delete it. Parents can contact us at support@splitnor.com.
12. Regional information
India
We process personal data in line with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. You can withdraw consent, request correction or erasure, and nominate another person to exercise your rights. For any grievance, contact our Grievance Officer at support@splitnor.com. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
European Economic Area and United Kingdom
Teckam is the data controller. The legal bases we rely on are listed in section 3. You have the rights in section 8, including data portability and the right to complain to your supervisory authority.

We collect the categories of information described in section 2 for the purposes in section 3. We do not sell or "share" personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you. You may request to know, correct or delete your information as described above.
13. Changes and contact
If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect, and update the date at the top.
